The therapeutic alliance is indicated as the a main curative factor in research meta-analysis. The modality of therapy although important is not always essential. So, making sure the therapist is trained and right for you is important. So the question might be, less whether I need to see a counsellor or psychotherapist and more to do with what therapy and counsellor/therapist works for me.
